The masks used in Noh theatre are more than characters.
They are states of being,
From the most innocent to the most intense,
From the kindest woman
To the most evil demon
To the most vengeful spirit.
These vengeful spirits are represented in Noh by the Onryo-kei.

Sixty-six Noh masks were created by Prince Shoutoku,
Seven of which were onryou for the most intense of roles.
And now all sixty-six masks are, in mind, body, and feeling,
The menreiki
Hata no Kokoro.

Tonight, she dons her seven onryou masks
For her inner hell breaks forth
Like seven restless spirits.
